A Brief Study on the Different Packaging Methods

Packaging is the art, science, and technology of protecting or enclosing goods for human consumption, storage, distribution, safety, and later use. This includes physical protection like securing the goods inside a package from outside objects, air quality, moisture, heat, light, vibration, abrasion, spillage and others. Packaging also refers to the creative process of developing, testing, designing, and creating individual packages.  Packaging plays an important role in supply chain management by determining the return on investments and the efficiency of distribution systems.

In addition, it helps increase the product life cycle.  The product packaging quality and type largely determine the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of any company’s packaging. Thus, effective, cost-effective, and quality packaging are essential for business growth and survival. The three basic product packaging types are primary packaging (which includes boxes and bags), secondary packaging (which includes inserts and loose cushions used for the primary packaging), and customized packaging.

Primary packaging:

Primary packaging refers to those pre-packaged solutions made from cardboard, bubble wrap, wrapping paper, and other similar packaging materials. It is usually produce in bulk to save on production costs. High-quality, good-quality primary packaging materials are used in the majority of cases.  Furthermore, the packaging material does not go through the various quality controls during the shipping process and does not undergo any kind of inspection before it comes into contact with the final consumer.

Secondary packaging materials include foam inserts, padded liners, bubble wraps, and other similar packing materials. These are used primarily during the transportation of goods in order to add additional protection and stability to them. Some of these goods remain stable during the shipping process but lose their strength after some time.

This means that the manufacturer is unable to make any changes in the sheet sizes. Often, it is the case where the manufacturer is producing a large number of medicines and it is common for the pharmaceutical products to have a shelf life of fifteen years or more. Due to this, most of the manufacturers prefer to use standard-sized sheets, which can be customized as per customer specifications. This is one of the reasons why many pharmaceutical companies prefer to use plastics packaging instead of foam inserts and blister packs for the purposes of shipping.

Plastic Packaging:

Plastic Packaging refers to a number of different types of Packaging methods. The material used for manufacturing these Packaging methods can be polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polycarbonate, and polysulfone. Many companies are now shifting towards using plastic Packaging methods rather than foam Packaging methods for the production of medicines and other toxic products.
