So how does an electric skateboard really work? Believe it or not but its function is very similar to the traditional longboard, except for one thing. You do not have to speed up yourself. Instead of you having to kick yourself forward, this is driven by either one or two electric motors in the back of the skateboard. One thing that must absolutely not be forgotten is that all means of transport that can be driven at high speeds can in the event of an accident cause great damage to the person driving it and people around it. I can therefore not be more clear that it is extremely important to show electric skateboards the respect they deserve. I also strongly recommend that you spend the time needed to learn to control the board at lower speeds, and then work your way up the speed scale. A recommendation is also that proper protective equipment is used at each run. I myself have been on board for over 20 years both winter and summer and ALWAYS wear the least helmet.
Understand how it works
In order to be able to ride an electric skateboard safely in the best way, it can help to know exactly how they work. Something that surprises most is that electric longboards are nothing new. The first models were created by board enthusiasts as early as the 70s, with both an electric and petrol-powered engine. If you stood above, you could not see any major difference between a regular and a motorized skateboard, but it was only when you lifted or turned them that you understood that there was a real battery and an engine underneath. Today’s electric skateboards are much slimmer and weigh about ten kilos less, but they still work in an equivalent way. They are also wireless, unlike the 70s models that were connected by cable from the control module to the remote control.
The different parts of the board
An electric skateboard consists of several different parts which we go through below, you also get a shorter description of each part’s function.
Motor – Usually you find one or two motors on an electric longboard, these can be mounted on the underside and drive the wheels forward using belt drive. The second variant is hub motors. These motors are mounted inside the wheel itself, which makes the skateboard more compact and slim.
Battery – Most electrical boards are equipped with a lithium-ion battery, the size and its capacity can vary greatly between the different models. The purpose of the battery is to provide a constant power supply to the motors to propel the board forward. Unusually common are also lead batteries which are heavy and have a short life, these are not recommended.
Remote control – The part you use to regulate the speed of your travel. Sits softly and nicely in the hand and comes in a slightly different design, some smaller than others. Common on the remote control is a joystick used to regulate speed and braking, an on / off button, a button that switches between reverse / forward operation and most LED lights that indicate the battery level of the remote control, connection to and battery level on the skateboard.
Motherboard – The motherboard’s task is to connect the battery, motors and remote control. It is the brain of the skateboard and via this the motors are regulated according to signals from the remote control. It also protects against overcharging, electric nails and ensures that everything works optimally.
